Data breach, another wake-up call

Data breach, another wake-up call

Posted in Blog articles by Matt Hodges-Long on 16/01/2018
That sick to the stomach, gut wrenching, “what have I done?” moment as you go back through your sent items and realise you attached the wrong document. The panicked call to your boss to ‘fess up to your mistake. Next thing you know, an investigation is launched, the ICO is informed and your error is front page on BBC News.

For someone in Leicester City Council last week, that imagined scenario was reality as data for hundreds, if not thousands, of vulnerable people was emailed to 27 taxi firms in error.... continue reading

Investors want better risk reporting

Since the financial crisis of 2008, there has been increased focus on risk management and risk reporting. The requirement for companies to report on long-term risk through the annual viability statement has gone some way to addressing concerns. However, according to a recent Financial Reporting Council (FRC) report (Risk and viability reporting), investors are looking for more.... continue reading

In trying to defend the credibility of one of her senior colleagues, MP Nadine Dorries admitted on Twitter that she routinely shares her passwords with staff and interns! Poor password security is one of the main causes of Cyber Breach. The importance of password security requires leadership from the highest level. Companies woefully underprepared for GDPR

Posted in Blog articles by Matt Hodges-Long on 30/11/2017
Six months from today, on 25 May 2018, organisations of all shapes and sizes must be compliant with the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).

GDPR is the biggest change in data protection across the EU since the 1995 Data Protection Directive. Although companies have been given around two years to comply, it seems that many are behind with their preparations. As a result, they will struggle to meet the 25 May deadline.... continue reading

Appointed Representative oversight is lacking warns FCA

Posted in Blog articles by Matt Hodges-Long on 07/11/2017
The FCA’s warning last week (Nov 3), that a lack of Appointed Representative (AR) oversight is putting customers at risk of financial harm, is not the last word on this subject.

This is the third time the FCA has commented on AR oversight during the last year and it is only a matter of time before stricter penalties are imposed. That will surely lead to regulatory action being taken against those firms not satisfying the FCA's requirements.... continue reading
Treat your business like a baby

Treat your business like a baby

Posted in Blog articles by Matt Hodges-Long on 17/07/2017
One of my colleagues had a new baby recently. He’s bought the books and read the recommendations. Car seats, stair gates, bath thermometers and corner guards have all been dutifully ordered and installed. Smoke alarm batteries have been replaced, the baby monitor is installed and immunisations are all booked!

It got me thinking... when it comes to keeping a new baby safe, no time or expense is spared, but do business owners analyse the potential risks to their company in the same way new parents assess the sharp corners in their home? The answer, as a general rule, no.... continue reading

Death of a CEO

Posted in Blog articles by Matt Hodges-Long on 18/04/2017
The Death of a CEO is not something we like to think or talk about. While we tend to associate risks with fires, floods, data breaches and hurricanes, death is the only risk guaranteed to affect us.... continue reading
